Set in the Roman province of Judea during the 1st century, the story centres around Roman tribune Marcellus Gallio, who wins Jesus's robe in a dice game shortly after the crucifixion. When his slave, a defiant Greek named Demetrius, steals the robe and escapes with it, Marcellus starts experiencing disturbing visions, each a new, painful reminder of his past sins. To ease his conscience, he sets out on a mission to locate the missing robe and destroy it, but ends up discovering God instead.
